Topical Treatment for Sprains, Muscle Injuries and General Pain.

Topical treatment for pain relief can be beneficial to both the patient and the physician. In patients with ankle sprains, one study showed that topically-applied ketoprofen was significantly superior to orally administered ketoprofen with regard to reduced swelling and improved mobility. Piroxicam is another agent that can be used in the same manner as ketoprofen. For topical muscle relaxation, ingredients such as cyclobenzaprine and baclofen can be used. These work well for localized muscle relaxtion and don’t cause the main side of drowsiness.

For general pain, ingredients such as lidocaine, benzocaine, tetracaine and ketamine can be applied topically. All of these are alternatives to the oral medications which can cause side effects and sometimes not relieve the pain completely. Using quality chemicals and equipment not found in most pharmacies, we can compound prescription topical preparations containing the dose of medication(s) that are needed. Ask our compounding pharmacist about customized pain management.
